When I was young I looked up to the skies
I prayed and I wondered what would become of my life
Shapeless days with no plan of what’s to be
The smell of green fields and long shadows of summer trees
Kids playing games, in a lot covered in weeds
A world of impressions, a mind full of dreams
I saw a demon of death and a panic took hold
A pale ghost that would haunt me until I grow old
I looked up to the Heavens, on my knees I cried out your name
I called out for my father - but my father, he never came
I believed in you and your promise – could they turn out to be lies?
You can tell what lives in a man’s soul by the empty look in his eyes
Watching your habits and leaning your moves
Storm clouds that gather around an angry man’s blues
Too scared to stay sober, too weak to commit
You scrounge for a meaning, your promise turns treasure to shit
Dodging the bullets in any shelter you find
An invitation to shadows that can poison your mind
You hustle, you deal, you beg for a home
You trade all that is precious for the promise of gold
You looked up to the Heavens, you keeled down and cried out his name
I know that you called for your father, but your father, he never came
The promise of hope you were given, they all turned out to be lies
I can tell that your soul is empty, by the desperate look in your eyes
The visions of grandeur has deluded your head
You look for new victims so your syndrome can spread
The lies that you tell to the people you meet
Are like flies that descend on the warm sticky meat
In the trauma of illness, with any nurse that you find
You're masking the pain, but you can’t leave it behind
You abandon your children for prescriptions and whores
You find a new city to hide in, but never a cure
You looked up and screamed to the Heavens, and desperately cried out his name
On your knees you begged for your father - but your father, he never came
The promise of love and of hope, now has grown sick and has died
You can tell man’s soul is tormented by the violent look in his eyes
You must have been tearing apart
It must have felt like claws in your brain
I watched you sell all that was sacred
And one heart can’t take that much pain
You must have been hunted by demons
You must have had evil inside
My heart has been punctured and pierced
‘Cause you gave up your life and just died
